Landscape architecture in ARKANSAS is about the nature of opportunity, nature of place, the nature of environment, and the nature of people. Local and internationally acclaimed landscape architects have built award-winning works in the state’s capital Little Rock: Heifer International Headquarters and the Clinton Library. Two Arkansas landscape architects designed the first two green roofs in the state. Our urban centers, towns, and nationally competitive university create a culture for arts and design while complementing the state’s wilderness and rural beauty. The National Park Service manages the nation’s first designated scenic river, The Buffalo, a system of Civil War battle sites, and works of Roosevelt’s’ Civil Conservation Corp. Our members take their frontier spirit out-of-state to create award-winning zoo exhibits nationwide. The University of Arkansas’s botanic garden, Garvan Woodland Gardens, is led by a landscape architect who excels at achieving high design standards such that the Garden serves as a national tourist destination. Arkansas landscape architects are shaping the state by taking leadership positions in the municipal and state governments, who have created new greenways, parks, playgrounds, communities, and low impact developments in one of the top 10 fastest growing areas in the nation.
Arkansas is, after all, the Natural State.
